Facing Addiction

Veronica showed up to our Session loaded.

October 23, 2009.

We took pictures anyway and I got her to talk.  She opened up about lots of stuff.  Painful stuff.  Stuff that I wish had never happened to her.

There was no way I was gonna let her leave in the state she was in so we kept talking.  And talking.  My husband was working behind the scenes to get her into a facility that night.

She did not want to go.

She was not ready.

She climbed into a taxi and it pulled away.

This morning, I asked Veronica's permission to post her photos here.

She gave it to me.

I also asked her to write down her thoughts on addiction.

November 9, 2013.

This is what she sent...

On the dark side of the spoon your dreams get mutilated beaten and fucked raw. Hell doesn't know it's fury. There wasn't a force on earth that could have prepared me for the roads I was going to walk. I made it out of the muck barefoot and barely breathing. On the dark side of the spoon you are as lost as a blindfided person in a black room looking for a black cat that isn't there.

I watched her eyes search for me through all the chaos. Too busy playing too deprived of a mothers love so Sweetly so hurriedly desperately blindly she followed the sound of my voice until her eyes found me and her fingers touched me to realize I was not the mother she knew. she knew i was lost on the dark side of the spoon.
